Background The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin family. The keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. The type I cytokeratins consist of acidic proteins which are arranged in pairs of heterotypic keratin chains. This cytokeratin is a major cellular protein of mature enterocytes and goblet cells and is specifically expressed in the gastric and intestinal mucosa. The type I cytokeratin genes are clustered in a region of chromosome 17q12-q21. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
Function Plays a significant role in maintaining keratin filament organization in intestinal epithelia. When phosphorylated, plays a role in the secretion of mucin in the small intestine (By similarity). [UniProt]

    Immunofluorescence: HT-29 cells were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde for 30 min at RT, permeabilized with 0.1% Triton X-100 for 10 min at RT then blocked with 10% goat serum for half an hour at RT. Samples were stained with ARG66248 anti-Cytokeratin 20 antibody [SQab1737] (green) at 1:200, 4°C.

    Flow Cytometry: HT-29 cells stained with ARG66248 anti-Cytokeratin 20 antibody [SQab1737] (Red). The cells were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde (10 min) and then permeabilized with 0.1% TritonX-100 for 15 min. The cells were then incubated in the primary antibody at 1:1000 dilution in 1x PBS/1% BSA for 30 min at 4°C. The secondary antibody used was a Goat anti-rabbit Alexa Fluor® 488 (IgG H+L) at 1:2000 dilution for 20 min at 4°C. Unlabelled sample (Blue) was used as a control.
