Bioinformation

Gene Symbol SPINK2
Gene Full Name serine peptidase inhibitor, Kazal type 2 (acrosin-trypsin inhibitor)
Background Predicted to enable serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity. Involved in acrosome assembly. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including male germ cell proliferation; negative regulation of serine-type endopeptidase activity; and seminiferous tubule development. Located in acrosomal vesicle and neuron projection. Is expressed in intestine; male reproductive gland or organ; oviduct; skin; and tongue. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in spermatogenic failure 29. Orthologous to human SPINK2 (serine peptidase inhibitor Kazal type 2). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Jul 2025]
Function As a strong inhibitor of acrosin, it is required for normal spermiogenesis. It probably hinders premature activation of proacrosin and other proteases, thus preventing the cascade of events leading to spermiogenesis defects (PubMed:21705336, PubMed:28554943). May be involved in the regulation of serine protease-dependent germ cell apoptosis (PubMed:21705336). It also inhibits trypsin (PubMed:21705336). [UniProt]
