Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus belonging to the Hepadnaviridae family. HBV infection causes both acute and chronic hepatitis B, which may progress to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The virus consists of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), a nucleocapsid core, and DNA genome. HBV antigens and their corresponding antibodies are widely used as serological biomarkers to determine the stage of infection and monitor disease progression.
